I travel to and from Incheon International Airport more than 40 times a year. I have been using Terminal 2, which is relatively well-equipped, and only two or three years ago, I was able to get on board an hour before departure. Things have changed dramatically since last year, however, and now the standard place is to wait two to three hours during peak hours.
The airport simply blames the "increasing number of users," but the real problem with the airport that I've experienced and observed firsthand was the **total crisis of the operating system.
1. The absence of tens of billions of dollars of latest search tables and "skilled staff."
The airport recently introduced the latest CT scan stand, which eliminates the need for laptops or liquids. In theory, it needs to be faster, but the reality is the opposite. Unlike conventional 2D X-rays, 3D stereoscopic images need to be read, and the staff is extremely inexperienced to handle them.
The long reading time even after expensive machines are brought in, so the machines often stop, and eventually, there is a paradoxical situation that only causes bottlenecks by teasing expensive equipment.
2. Deployment of 'mechanical' personnel ignoring peak times
The airport is bombarded with passengers in the morning and afternoon, and at certain times. Common sense operations require intensive staffing and full operation of search lines at this time of day.
Currently, however, Incheon International Airport appears to have the same number of employees, whether it is the busiest or free time. This proves that there is no flexible manpower management at all, which leads to passengers' constant waiting.
3. Half 'Smart Pass' Excluding Family Travelers
The facial recognition "Smart Pass" introduced for early departure is not possible to register children under the age of seven. Elderly people are also not easy to use due to the difficulty of the registration process.
Eventually, family travelers cannot use it even if they want to, so they are driven to the general exit. The smart pass line is empty, but there is a "balloon effect" that intensifies the bottleneck as people flock to only the reduced general gate. Technology for efficiency is rather a drag on ordinary passengers.
4. a duty-free delivery center that has become a market for teotaegi
Not long ago, we witnessed 160 people waiting at the duty-free delivery center. The airport has been expanded, but the delivery center has been moved to a narrower and more inaccessible place.
The space is small and the movement is twisted, so many passengers give up receiving the goods due to flight time even after purchasing them. Even duty-free zones, a key source of revenue for airports, are managed so poorly that the essence does not work properly.
Incheon International Airport has spent a huge budget to build facilities and machines (hardware) to the best in the world, but the system and manpower (software) to operate them are failing. It is not the airport that blames passengers for "come early," but it is time for a leader who can solve the lack of operational skills that cannot properly run their infrastructure. Since the facilities have improved, I think it will not be too difficult to return to the best in the world if a well-informed person leads them properly.
