I read Gu's proof yesterday and today. In the book, people eat people. It also eats raw meat of an uncooked dead body for dozens of days.
The most surprising thing is that it is based on 'cannibalism'. What is more powerful than this in the world? What remains if we reveal cannibalism in the old proof?
Two men and women from underprivileged families. They have grown together since elementary school and held hands in an urban area where the environment is not good. While kissing and having sex in high school. In the middle, an elementary school student who was close dies in a car accident and gets separated from each other due to the shock. The man lives with his older Dolsing sister. He drinks soju and sleeps with her. The woman lives alone after her aunt dies. In the middle, the man leaves his sister and goes to the army. After that, the man and the woman get together. Due to their parents' debts, they are kicked out by a loan shark and move from place to place. After being caught by a loan shark, the man gets beaten and runs away, gets in a car accident, and dies next to a public phone booth in a wreck. The woman brings her dead boyfriend's body home and eats it.
What kind of loan shark is so fierce in chasing people and assaulting them? It is physically impossible to eat and swallow a dead person alive. It is not possible. How can a woman named Fragile Common Dam chews and swallows a young man by ripping off flesh and muscles with her teeth? It is impossible to eat even 150g of grilled pork because she is full.
It is also impossible to put a man bleeding blood in a taxi. It is also difficult for two people to move. It is bizarre, horrible, and disgusting to take this and that as a realistic thing. I feel like throwing up. It is a story that cannot be read because it is grotesque.
Should I say it's from the 7th to 80s? Factories, poverty, loan sharks. This world is far from Korea in the 21st century, where smartphones are used and well-being is well-established. This is also different from the real world, but I read it thinking it was a parallel universe as devices to create emotions.
Eating is a metaphor. It was thought of as a symbol of myth and poem. In the novel "Dog" written by Kim Hoon, there is a scene where a disabled baby is swallowed. The novel was written 10 years before Gu's proof. It was similar to the scene where the dog sent his baby back to where it was because he loved it so much. When the dog ate the baby, the owner said, "You poop. I fed him double the amount of rice for the baby, and he eats my baby!" In reality, a dog swallows a baby. It is a very symbolic metaphor. It is not known whether Choi Jin-young picked the motif after reading Kim Hoon's dog.
With intense material and short sensuous sentences, they create bizarre but sad, pathetic, and poor emotions. It feels like experimenting with the limitations of language. I think I can express this level of subject matter like this with a tool called Korean. There are unfamiliar emotions that I have never felt in my life.
I think it was a funeral in my imagination in sadness when I saw the body of my lover who died miserably. I don't think I actually ate my body. I imagined taking the sphere with me in a car, washing my body, and eating it. I think the sphere's body in the imagination means the memory connected to the sphere. It seems to mean devouring all those memories and putting them in the body for good.
Choi Jin-young's writing skills are outstanding. He made me cry when I was eating people. How much he must have loved and been sad to imagine that. In the latter part of the book, I felt great sadness in his description of Gu's death, which made me remember Gu and Dam.
Even the author couldn't understand the reason in an interview about the experimental work, which had not sold 2,000 copies at the time of publication, reversing and becoming a bestseller within a few years. Above all, I was deeply impressed by Choi Jin-young's writing ability. I can't explain why. It's an excellent writing skill that makes you so immersed. I think that's the reason for the reverse.
[Book scrap]
"I know what it's like to be left alone after losing a loved one. I'm sick of it. I'd rather die. I'll leave. When I found the sphere in a dark place 30 steps away from the phone booth, the sphere's body was filled with wounds and bruises. My eyes were swollen red, my nose was crushed, and my front teeth were missing. I asked if he was sick or if he was in a lot of pain, but the sphere did not answer. I sat down on the street, hugged the sphere, and imagined the sphere's thirty steps for the dawn to come. The will to move barely while dying, bones and muscles, and the sphere's mind. I could not stand any imagination, so I rather took out my brain and threw it away.
Gu died on the street.
What killed the Gu.
Do I want to be a person?"
