When you work in an organization called a university, the power of office workers in headquaters is strong. In the case of universities, vice presidents around the dean of colleges and administrative staff who support them often control the decision-making made in departments. Complaints frequently appear against employees working for headquaters at faculty meetings in departments. Instead of providing support in the process of education and research activities, it plays a role in slowing down decision-making with one's own administrative authority.
There is a reason why there are employees working for headquarters despite these complaints. It prevents cheating or unintended negligence from occurring in the process of accounting or business. In fact, there have been things that almost made a mistake because I did not understand these contents well while working. In the process of pursuing research or education-related work, it is very difficult for professors to understand all bylaws, and it is practically difficult for professors to know how the bylaws are applied in reality. Therefore, even if they do not like the employees working for headquarters, they are asking questions and receiving help.
It looks like artificial intelligence will probably replace the headquarters of staff who controlled teams that created real services or products for an organization with this administrative authority. Generative AI provides information that ordinary employees can understand when asking questions about bylaws. This function overlaps with the role of administrative staff who controlled sub-organizations in the past in headquarters.
AI answers questions considerably faster than employees working for headquarters. It takes a considerable amount of time to get help from headquarters staff in the current organizational structure. This is because these employees usually manage more than 100 people working for sub-organizations. However, AI can communicate with employees in sub-organizations simultaneously. Perhaps this is an important incentive to introduce AI into the organization rather than maintaining the employment of existing headquarters employees from the perspective of the leaders in charge of the organization.
Now that there are no jobs, it might seem like the negative effects of AI. I don't think I should come to that simple conclusion. I have often complained that there is a limited amount of money available for labor costs when I work, and that resources that should be used for practical education and research are being spent inefficiently in order to maintain the workforce working for Headquaters. I see hope that if AI minimizes labor costs for "management supervision," it will improve the university's performance by hiring more people who focus on education and research that universities essentially have to do.
Health care and mental health services also see hope that their expenses will be used to hire health care workers. Currently, 20% of health insurance spending in the United States is administrative. To prevent claims for violating regulations, numerous lawyers and former health care workers review, authorize, or reject claims for benefits. I believe that this feature can be replaced by AI. I see hope that $500 billion of the nearly $5 trillion in medical expenses could be used to treat patients if the 20% total expenditure on the supervision function currently spent is lowered to 10%.
Because of this change, it seems necessary to avoid choosing a career as an administrative employee within an organization. It seems important to choose a career that continuously accumulates knowledge and experience to face consumers or patients and solve their problems.
