< French senator's speech to parliament - why should Europe fight Trumpism?>
I strongly recommend it. The story is very good. This is a speech by a French senator denouncing why Trump's recent series of actions have deviated from the orbit in the history of international politics. French Senator Claude Malourette on March 4.
---------------
Trump unintentionally did the impossible. Made the EU stronger and brought the UK closer than it would have been to join the EU.
The European army is now certain, and this will include the UK and other European countries that are not EU members.
"Mr. President, Prime Minister, Ministers, and my dear fellow Members,
Europe is at a significant turning point in its history: America's shield is collapsing, Ukraine is in danger of being abandoned, and Russia is strengthening.
Washington became the court of Emperor Nero. It is ruled by a fiery emperor, obedient servants, and a ketamine-drunk clown purging civil servants.
This is a tragedy in the free world, but most of all, it's an American tragedy. Trump's message is that it's no use being allies. He won't protect allies, he'll impose more tariffs than enemies, and he'll support dictatorships that invade you, threatening to take your territory.
The king of the deal is showing what the art of the deal is. He thinks he can get down in front of Putin and scare China, but Xi Jinping sees such a wreck and is probably accelerating preparations for an invasion of Taiwan.
No U.S. president in history has ever given in to an enemy. No one has ever stood up for an aggressor against an ally. No one has ever trampled on the U.S. Constitution, issued so many illegal orders, dismissed judges who could stop him, fired generals all at once, weakened all checks and balances, and seized social media.
This is the beginning of usurping democracy, not the degree to which we get out of liberalism. Let's remember that it took only a month, three weeks, two days to topple the Weimar Republic and its constitution.
I believe in the power of American democracy, and the United States is already protesting. But Trump has done America more harm in a month than he did in the last four years of his presidency. We were at war with a dictator, but now we are fighting a traitor-backed dictator.
Eight days ago, just as Trump was patting Macron on the back at the White House, the U.S. voted at the U.N., along with Russia and North Korea, against Europeans calling for the withdrawal of Russian troops.
Two days later, in the Oval Office, a man who avoided military service taught Zelensky, a war hero, lessons in morality and strategy, fired like a servant, and ordered him to give in or resign.
Tonight, he left another stigma by stopping his promised arms supply. What should we do against this betrayal? The answer is simple: fight back.
And first and foremost, let's not get it wrong. Ukraine's defeat will be Europe's defeat. Baltic states, Georgia, and Moldova are already on the list. Putin's goal is to return to Yalta, where half of the continent was ceded to Stalin.
The southern hemisphere countries are waiting for the outcome of the conflict to decide whether they should continue to respect Europe, or if they can now trample it.
What Putin wants is an end to the order that the United States and its allies established 80 years ago. The first principle is to prohibit the acquisition of territory through force.
This idea is at the very root of the United Nations, and today Americans vote for the invaders and against the attackers, because Trump's vision aligns with Putin's: return to the sphere of influence, and the great powers dictate the fate of a small nation.
Mine is Greenland, Panama, Canada, yours is Ukraine, Baltic countries, Eastern Europe, and his is Taiwan and the South China Sea.
This is called "diplomatic realism" at a party of oligarchs in Mar-a-Lago Bay.
So we're alone. But to say you can't resist Putin is false. Contrary to Kremlin propaganda, Russia is in a bad situation. In three years, the so-called second largest military in the world has only stolen breadcrumbs from a country with three times less population.
A 25% interest rate, a collapse in forex and gold reserves, and a demographic collapse show Russia is on the brink. The U.S. reaching out to Putin a helping hand is the biggest strategic mistake he can make in the war.
The impact is intense, but it has its advantages. Europeans are emerging from a denial of reality. In just one day in Munich, they realized that Ukraine's survival and Europe's future were in their hands and that there were three essentials.
To compensate for the American abandonment, we need to accelerate military aid to Ukraine so that it can hold on and, of course, solidify Ukraine's and Europe's presence in the negotiations.
This will be expensive. We will have to break the taboo against the use of frozen Russian assets. We will have to detour Moscow's accomplices within Europe to a coalition of willing participating countries, and of course, include the United Kingdom. Second, we must demand that all agreements be accompanied by kidnapped children, captives, and absolute security guarantees. After Budapest, Georgia, and Minsk, we know how valuable an agreement with Putin is. These guarantees require sufficient military force to prevent new aggression.
Finally, the most urgent reason for this is that it takes the longest time, and we must build a European defence that has been neglected under the umbrella of the United States since 1945 and abandoned since the fall of the Berlin Wall.
This is a tremendous task, but today the standard by which democratic European leaders will be judged in their history books depends on the success of this task.
Friedrich Merz has just declared that Europe needs its own military alliance
