These days, stories about the so-called "People's Island" are spreading on the Internet, saying that the rich people in Gangnam have good personality and do not have luxury. The more expensive the real estate is, the better the personality of the people and the more different the people are. Rather, people who suffer from inferiority complex reveal luxury goods or foreign cars, but the real rich don't care about other people's reputation, go around in comfortable clothes, and are not interested in luxury.
Of course, the stories spreading like this take the form of purely individual 'experience stories' without any basis for empirical research. I've been doing business in Cheongdam-dong for a few months, I've moved from a lower level to an upper level, I've lived or worked in a rich neighborhood for a while. Interestingly, there are a large number of people who believe and spread these unfounded experiences, and there is a very strong phenomenon of trying to sympathize with them as if they are a 'truth' that should not be questioned.
In fact, there is no data in this rumor that can objectively prove that the so-called higher-level people, who do not commit corruption, avoid tax evasion, are more personable, contribute a lot to society, are altruistic, and considerate. The process by which fact-loving Koreans rely on some mythical experience story that has not been verified and spread rumors feels quite interesting. It is all the more so because it seems that there is actually a very strong justification for "should" rather than "yes."
It can be seen that there are two main minds at work here. One is a desire for higher education, and the other is a desire to prove higher education. But in fact, both minds are in the same structure. The belief that 'higher-class humans are superior' is absolutely necessary, whether it is someone who admires higher education or someone who believes that life is more valuable in higher education. Without such class beliefs, those who admire it do not have the power to climb up the ladder. Likewise, for those who have lived hard with all of their resources to move to higher education as their most important goal, such beliefs are proof that their lives are not wrong.
In our society, it is said that many things are differences in taste these days. Whether it's marriage, non-marriage, single, or dink, each life is just a matter of their own taste, and nothing is superior or inferior. The same goes for jobs, hobbies, and fashion choices. However, when it comes to real estate, a stronger class consciousness than any other era is being created. This class consciousness should never simply be reduced to a matter of differences in taste that suggests living in any neighborhood. It is fatal for those who build their lives based on class consciousness and gain self-esteem by comparing them to the neighborhood they live in. Therefore, we must believe that the 'quality of life' essentially changes as we go to higher levels.
Without this class consciousness and faith in it, the recent real estate frenzy is difficult to explain. We can fully doubt that this is connected to some kind of enthusiastic mind rather than a rational economic act, given that all assets in the country are concentrated on real estate in the center of Seoul, household debt is incomparably soaring, and the balance between income and assets is completely collapsing, resulting in a society with a low birth rate that is almost unparalleled in human history.
The crazy mind is a combination of fantasy and belief that the higher you go, the more different the world there is, where you can become a different human being and be guided to a better life. The fear is that if you don't join the ranks, the land where we live will be extinguished and disappear due to local extinction, and only alienation and culling will be waiting. In other words, if my life in this faith is difficult and the environment around me feels strange, it is because I have not been able to move to that higher heaven. It is the last oasis in Korea, where good-natured neighbors are inviting us to a beautiful life with open arms, beyond just objective school districts and infrastructure.
In fact, whether you believe in this crazy belief or not is your personal freedom and choice. However, the conventional wisdom seems to be spreading that those who do not believe in it are wrong, and that the reason for culling and anxiety is that they do not have this faith. It is also a phenomenon of times that feels somewhat awkward to me, considering that the places where I have always lived have the most precious places in my life and that I have all the valuable memories and relationships I need. Perhaps this is just a last-ditch phenomenon in a society where I have lost how to fully love the life I have been given. Or maybe there is the last heaven in which I have to change my whole life to reach, according to the true universal faith of our society.
