[Integration with Hulk and community]
- one's devotion
Everyone, do you know the movie, Hulk? The movie is about Bruce Banner, the main character who used to be lonely and scared. When Banner is angry, he unknowingly transforms into a monster with great power, the Hulk. There are two personalities coexisting in his body. Banner is fearless and lonely, but things change completely when he transforms into the Hulk.
Bruce Banner has seven doctoral degrees in nuclear physics, biochemistry, radiation physics, mechanical engineering, robotics, computer science, and mathematics, and is a genius who is also qualified for medicine (M.D.). In the movie, he is depicted as a match for Einstein. His problem, however, is his other personality, the Hulk. Unlike Banner, who is rational and intelligent, the Hulk displays his emotions violently and tries to pop out even if Banner gets a little excited. Banner constantly tries to control the Hulk, fearing that he will harm himself and his surroundings.
Contrary to Banner, Hulk has a strong desire to show off his presence, and his language level is close to that of a kindergarten student, so everything is straightforward. Above all, Banner can't stand the thought of hurting others, but when he gets angry, Hulk acts destructive without hesitation. Banner lives by blaming himself, checking his heart rate to suppress Hulk. As a result, he can't even comfortably love and is afraid of causing harm to his loved ones. That's why he always runs away to faraway places.
In the meantime, a big challenge arises for Banner and the Hulk. An alien invasion that is trying to destroy the Earth kills half of the Earth. In order to defeat this, Banner and the Hulk eventually reconcile with each other, and as a result, they are reborn as intact beings in which rational ability and Hulk's power are integrated and gain peace. That's how Avengers and Rahm save the Earth.
Jung saw that humans, like Freud, have parts that are both conscious and unconscious. Shadows have characteristics that are opposite to what individuals consciously acknowledge as their personality. Shadows are the dark parts of the self, that is, the unconscious alter ego.
Why is shadow a dark part? This is because parts that we fear, deny, or consider unacceptable are suppressed by the unconscious. These suppressed things are contained in the unconscious and become shadows. Consciously biased to one extreme, the shadows that represent opposite positions also become extreme. The unconscious is always active, so shadows also see opportunities to reveal themselves in reality.
The more educated, cultivated, and noble the conscious part of an individual's personality becomes, the more infantile and impulsive the shadow part becomes. Because you receive no attention or management. Then, when a person becomes extremely separated from one another and becomes difficult to be together, they begin to exhibit destructive and painful activities. The unconscious desire us to be complete. We do not want consciousness to be extremely biased to one side. We want things we do not want and reject to be included in the totality of our personality.
Psychoanalysis is absolutely necessary in order to discover shadows of an individual. These shadows are discovered through encounters in a community. Parker Palmer said, "Community is always the place where people who I do not want to be with stay." This means that in relationships, projections always occur. In other words, seeing what's in me from the other person. The downside I see in others is that they are actually in me as well.
For example, I get very angry when I see people on the street who smoke and harm others. But this anger made me so hard. One day, I analyzed the shadow inside me. I have always lived with consideration and courtesy, but in fact, I want to live a comfortable life like him to some extent. Rather than being considerate, thinking, and contributing deeply to others, the desire to live a comfortable life was suppressed. Realizing this changed my feelings toward smokers.
I've become a little generous with myself.
Jung likened his shadow to a painting on his back. That's how invisible he is to himself. That's why psychoanalysis is necessary to identify one's shadow. Shadows are eventually discovered through encounters in a community. Here, a community is a place of family, friends, religious groups, and houses of hearts.
I'll give you one more example. I have a friend who often boasts of his accomplishments. He always boasts about his accomplishments on Facebook or Instagram. That's why I get angry when I see him. It's because I feel so childish and unassuming. But the problem is that people around him applaud and encourage him. I want to be loved, but I was suppressing it because I thought it was childish. When I realized this, I started talking about my accomplishments little by little, and I got positive responses from people.
Jung said two things about how to integrate with shadows. The first is to accept that shadows are inside me. This is harder than I thought. Because it's scary and hard to admit that there is something childish and annoying inside of me.
The second way is to listen to and act out the shadow. For example, an angry person who sees a person bragging about his or her accomplishments should practice telling them little by little. That way, you can get positive responses from people around you.
I have emphasized listening very much, but at some point, I was angry at people who didn't listen and only spoke their own words. This anger was because my desire to say what I wanted to say without caring about others was suppressed. I realized this and started practicing. As I talked about myself little by little, I felt at ease.
The process of integrating with shadows is to grow into a full me. Adler said, "All worries are worries through relationships." To solve problems in a relationship
