The number of pharmacists in the U.S. has increased by 17.8% over the past five years. As the population grows, of course, the number of pharmacists has to increase. And as the percentage of the elderly increases, so the number of pharmacists increases.

The problem is... pharmacists' salaries are down considerably compared to 2018. Of course, there is a pay gap between men and women. Women with high child care costs have lower salaries than men in these jobs, which require long hours and weekends.

In 2018, it was 154,000 dollars for men and 148,000 dollars for women. That's adjusted for inflation in 2023. But when you take inflation into account, it's down to 136,000 dollars for men and 130,000 dollars for women in 2023.

Inflation-adjusted median wages for workers remained almost unchanged, but still about half of pharmacists' median income. $68,000 for men and $56,000 for women.

Still, pharmacists can make a decent amount of money, but if you look at their working hours, they're like a local doctor in Korea. When you're employed by a large chain like CVS, your working hours are up and down. Running a pharmacy doesn't make it easy for you to compete with these big pharmacies.

Lastly, Asian, which accounts for about 6% of wage workers in the United States, accounts for more than 20% of pharmacists. It is a pharmacist that provides good jobs to the children of Korean immigrants. However, it is a reality that large pharmacies automate and deliver three months' worth of medicine online, and the value of pharmacists in the labor market is getting lower and lower.
