Why do we have to increase our literacy in writing? Shouldn't video literacy be as high as the times are? No. Actually, it is a very fundamental part, but people seem to be too familiar to know exactly this part. Literacy is important because it is an essential element for democracy to work.

If you think about the past royal society, it is easy. Originally, making policies and recording were focused on people with high literary intelligence. For most people, there was no reason to let them study. Their opinions are not important in terms of status or class. When the king sometimes asks these untrained people for their opinions or thoughts, of course, nonsense comes out. Oh, right. We can't discuss national history with farmers who are ignorant. This is why a democracy that makes policy decisions by a majority vote centered on citizens was called middle-right politics in ancient Greece.

The French Revolutionary Government established a public education system after the French Revolution, which was the beginning of modern democracy. The reason why the revolutionary government, which has a mountain of work to do, paid attention to this is similar in context. We did have a revolution together, but after talking, the level of people's thoughts was disastrous. At that time, egalitarianism was quite unfamiliar, so education was essential to create the idea and atmosphere of equality throughout France. It was trained through public education so that one individual citizen could express his or her opinion to the purpose of favoring the republic. Roughly abbreviated, this result led to the improvement of literacy among ordinary citizens.

Literacy simply refers to the ability to understand the meaning of a letter, but at the same time, it also refers to the ability to interpret the context between letters and letters. If the people of a democratic country are low in this ability, they do not understand in time whether the country is working well, strangely, or what is wrong. For example, if the literacy is low, it is difficult to judge whether you should go to the streets now to protest even if you have the value that the manipulation of state affairs is a serious problem. In a country with low literacy, extreme political action that is almost impossible to impeach the president with public opinion is almost impossible. You need to have literacy to be able to understand other people's words and improve them better, thereby forming and maintaining a strong political network in which parties with various thoughts compete with each other.

Then, you will be asked if such communication can be done through video rather than text. It is difficult. Because videos have a lot of visual and auditory information, so their level of accuracy is significantly higher than that of text. People can read critically relatively easily, but watching videos is much more difficult. It is hard to find a columnist who makes nonsense on the newspaper, but that's why it is so easy to find people who talk naturally on YouTube. Waste information that will be filtered out of text does not filter out well when it is a video.

Additionally, video costs a lot more in the process of production and communication than writing. In other words, people with a lot of money have more say. At the moment, it is difficult to see it as a tool that can spontaneously share more diverse opinions.

To sum up, the reason why society should discuss the problem of literacy is not just 'Oh, it's convenient and nice to live with Chinese characters, right?' Literacy is an essential element in the operation of democracy. So this is not a personal problem, but a thoroughly social problem.

I have a high level of literacy in society as a whole. To be honest, I prefer other people, especially the younger generation, if they have low literacy. They can think things they can't do, find things they can't find, and turn them into money. Nevertheless, the reason why I take the lead in raising the problem of literacy is that there are so many problems in the world that I cannot solve alone. It's because I want to spend my old age in a working democratic society.

People who say, "Isn't it okay because kids these days have excellent video literacy instead of writing?" don't seem to know what they have learned without their knowledge and what they are benefiting from it. If not, then maybe they are implementing a high-level strategy to eliminate competitors to survive in the AI era.

Well. If there are people who say, "I don't care much about democracy," I have nothing to say. If you agree with the purpose of the article, please share it.
