My country has the sky to the north and this country to the west of the earth's edge. ‥

The story of Prince Hyecho, the first world of the Korean people

There are four travelogues in the world.

1.7th-Century period of field history
2.8th Century Hyecho's King Ohcheon Chukgukjeon
3.13th Century Marco Polo's Eastern Visits
4.14th-century travelogue of Ibn Battuta

Hyecho is the first Korean to explore the maritime silk road and the land silk road.

He is a famous person named in the history of the world, but no one knew his name a hundred years ago.

How did Hyecho and her travelogue Wang Cheonchukgukjeon become known to the world? The excavation of the Donhwangjoseon is evaluated as one of the two major excavations of East-West civilization, along with the Dead Sea documents found in the Gumran Cave.

The Dead Sea Document shows Jesus as a teacher, not the son of God, through the spirituality and the gospel of early Christian gnosticists.

On May 16, 1900, Wang Won-rok, the custodian of the Donhwang Seokguram, was smoking in the cave. He was in doubt as he looked up the cave ceiling inadvertently. Tobacco smoke should be filled in the cave, but the smoke was escaping through the cracks in the cave walls.

When I beat the wall, there was a hollow sound inside, so I broke it down with a pickax. There was an amazing scene. There was a small annex, and there was a pile of ancient documents from the 5th to 11th centuries.

The number of literature written in 40,000 pieces is Chinese, Sanskrit, Tibetan, Sogdian, Uyghur, Kotan, and so on. Among them, 87.5 percent are Buddhist literature, 0.8 percent are Confucian literature, 0.9 percent are literary literature, 2.1 percent are contract documents, books, and publications of temples. The remaining 4.2 percent are called Don Hwang documents. Documents scattered around the world were photographed with microfilms and edited into a vast volume of 250 books to establish a new academic field called Don Hwanghak.

In the 26th year of Guangxi, China was facing a period of extreme chaos due to the invasion of the Western powers. Reports of the discovery of ancient documents in a desert cave were received, but no one was interested. The first person to encounter information about Don Hwang documents was a British star exploring Central Asia. He purchased Wang Do-sa for a few pennies and sent him to the British Museum through Delhi, India. Queen Elizabeth of England praised him and gave him a title of Duke.

In February 1908, news of the Donhwang came to Pelio, who was majoring in Oriental studies at French University of Hanoi. He immediately flew to Donhwang and bought Wangdosa. Pelio, who was fluent in Chinese, settled in a stone room and sorted out documents with high data value and sent them to the National Library of Paris. The literature contains Hyecho's Wang-Ohcheon-Chukgukjeon. The third person to visit the Donhwang document in 1912 was the Otani expedition in Japan.

They collected relics from Central Asia, including the Kizil Cave, and Don Hwang-related documents and brought them to Kyoto, Japan. Otani relics were donated to the Museum of Joseon Governor-General again.

The relics were left in Korea after being liberated from Japan. The relics of the Central Asian West at the National Museum of Korea in Yongsan were collected by Otani Exploration Team at the time. Otani is a monk of the Pure Land sect of Japan.

The Chinese belatedly realized the value of the Don Hwang document and made a list of the remaining documents. The title of the list is Don Hwang Yeo-rok, which means the list of Don Hwang documents stolen by thieves.

Looking at my hometown on a bright night
The floating clouds go back to the north of the stream.
I'm going to send a letter to the cloud side, but there's no response because of the strong wind

In my country, the sky is in the north
This country is west of the end of the earth
There are no geese in the sky
Who will bring the news to my home town of Guerim. ‥

At that time, Hyecho, a Benang traveler in her early 20s, wrote this poem while painting her hometown Silla on a distant land of Cheonchuk. Hyecho, the author of Wang-Oh-Chukgukjeon, was first introduced as a Buddhist monk from China. However, a Japanese scholar saw the poem above and announced to the academic world that Hyecho was a Buddhist monk from Silla.

I've left the lonely boat on the moon several times, but I've never been able to return to the clouds. ‥
